T-Mobile and Orange to join forces and become UK’s largest mobile operator

Manoj Solanki, Tuesday March 2, 2010 - 9:41 PM

The European Commission (EU) has formally granted clearance for Deutsche Telekom and France Telecom to merge their UK operations.

A condition of the merger for both companies is to part with a small amount of the mobile GSM spectrum that it owns.

The companies expect to complete the merger in Spring.  Customers will benefit from improved 2G and 3G network coverage.  An added benefit to this is a previous network sharing agreement formed with 3 in the UK.  A better quality of 3G services from the merger should also provide a platform for unparallelled mobile broadband offers say the companies.

Both the T-Mobile and Orange UK brands will continue to operate independently for the next 18 months, presumably while they both work out what the new brand for the joint company will be.

The merger will create a combine customer base of around 29.5 million, with a net company value exceeding £3.5 billion.
