Facebook and Twitter encouraging dangerous mobile use behind the wheel
Manoj Solanki, Friday February 26, 2010 - 9:37 PMA survey from YouGov has found that many motorists are still breaking the law and using their mobile behind the wheel whilst driving.
As well as calls and texting, drivers are going online on their mobiles, including checking Facebook and Twitter. In a survey of 2,100 adults, a worrying 31% said they took a call whilst driving, with 22% making a call.
Although the main issue is taking and receiving calls, 5% confessed to going to social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. A further 3% checked their emails behind the wheel.
Although some may claim they only use the internet on their mobile whilst in stationary traffic, this is still illegal. Drivers would get a £60 fine plus three penalty points on their licence for using a hand-held mobile phone whilst driving.
Research last year from the RAC showed that texting whilst driving slowed reaction times by 35%. The increasing availability of mobile internet on mobile phones only serves to exacerbate the problem.
