Record 120 million requests for iPlayer in January 2010

The BBC reports that there were 120 million TV and radio requests through the iPlayer in January 2010.

The figures, collected by BBC iStats, include online platforms and devices as well as Virgin Media TV.  In January 2009 there were 61.5 million requests, almost half the number of requests in comparison to January 2010.

The largest number of requests came through the iPlayer software for the PC/MAC.

A smaller percent of requests came from the Playstation 3 and the new BBC iPlayer on the Wii.  The iPlayer has only be available on the Nintendo Wii since Mid-November 2009 however, so may experience further growth.

In terms of TV programmes, the main reason for using the iPlayer appears to be as a catch-up service, with only a small percentage using it for live programmes last month. For radio programmes it was a different story as 60 percent of radio programme requests were for live programmes.

The most popular request in January 2010 was for episode 7 in the current series of Top Gear with 1.1 million requests, followed by Doctor Who The End of Time and Gavin and Stacey episode 6.
