Sky reports strong progress from broadband, telephony and HD services in half year results

Manoj Solanki, Thursday January 28, 2010 - 12:45 PM

Revenue and profits are up as Sky adds 172,000 new customers.

For the half year up to 31st December 2009, Sky reported strong progress and saw an increasing number of customers taking a bundle of broadband, telephone and TV.  All of its target exchanges are now fully unbundled (on its own network) meaning it can profit more from broadband customers who are on it rather than on BT’s standard wholesale network.  It currently has half a million customers on its own network, with a total of 2.4 million broadband customers.

Sky HD subscriptions were also up with two million customers now taking a Sky+ HD service.  Looking ahead, Sky is offering the HD box free to customers who take up a Sky HD subscription.  This weekend Sky will also be broadcasting the UK’s first ever 3D TV programme, the premier league match between Arsenal and Manchester United.  However the transmission is only to selected  pubs in the UK.

It is on track to launch the UK (and Europe’s) first ever dedicated 3D TV channel, which might prove an attractive addition to its line-up following the success of 3D movies in cinemas such as Avatar.

Overall, Sky profits were up 4% on the same period for the previous year.
