Carphone considering rival fibre network to BT and Virgin Media
Manoj Solanki, Thursday January 21, 2010 - 12:13 PMCarphone Warehouse is looking at the possibility of building a fibre-based broadband network that would compete directly with BT and Virgin Media.
BT’s high speed fibre-based broadband service will eventually be available to 40% of the population and should offer speeds of up to 100Mbps or 40Mbps depending on the area, using either fibre to the home (FTTH) or fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) technology. According to the Financial Times, chief executive Charles Dunstone says it will consider its own fibre-based network amongst its options to help it compete in the marketplace in light of BT’s new fibre network.
Carphone’s TalkTalk division is due to branch off as a separate company in the coming months following the demerger announcement last year.
Last month BT said the rollout of its fibre network is ahead of schedule and should be completed by 2012, possibly in time for the Olympics.
