Will YOU be getting superfast broadband?

Broadband analysis company Point Topic has revealed where BT’s next generation fibre-based broadband network is being deployed, area by area.

BT’s new fibre-rollout is now gathering momentum as it plans to provide around 10 million premises with next-generation broadband access (NGA), with speeds of up to 40Mbps using FTTC (Fibre To The Cabinet) technology.

Point Topic has produced a map that shows the phases of BT’s NGA deployment as well projects from alternative network operators (altnets). The map and population coverage by quarter can be viewed here. It also shows the areas of high demand for broadband in the UK.

There are big concerns however that the rollout will not cover many high demand areas. Point Topic estimates that BT’s deployment will reach about 35% of the population over the next 3 years. Tim Johnson, Chief Analyst at Point Topic says the “current plans won’t even cover half of the areas of high demand “.

Point Topic says that about 60% of the UK population are unlikely to get NGA before 2012, and this digital divide will cause further tension and anger amongst those who can’t receive it. Those will be able to receive it are likely to use their broadband connection much more.
