iPhone ready for launch on Orange amid concerns over download limits

Manoj Solanki, Monday November 9, 2009 - 6:41 PM

The iPhone is available on Orange from tomorrow (November 10th), but many have questioned the download limits from Orange.

The problem came when Orange announced that all packages will include unlimited mobile data on its 3G network.  However, read more about the packages and there is a fair-usage limit of 750MB of data.  This is what angered potential customers, who expressed their annoyance on-line via Twitter, various forums and blogs.

Orange has however defended itself over the limits.  Paul Jevons, director of portals, products and services for Orange UK, said in a statement: “This is not a cap, it is a very generous fair usage policy. The vast majority of customers will be completely unaffected by this.”

Mr Jevons did point out that the speed of the connection may become slower for the heaviest of users.

Orange also stated that there has not been an issue with the iPhone’s 750MB usage limit in other countries .  Whilst 750MB isn’t all that bad, the iPhone is a device that is great for web-browsing.

Orange’s 3G network is also better than O2, in terms of coverage and performance. So Orange users may be more likely to use the Internet.  The next few weeks and months will give an indication as to whether the fair-usage policy will be sufficient for most users in the UK.

The  iPhone 3G and 3GS will be available on Orange to buy in Orange stores, or online from Tuesday November 10.

Below are brief details of the iPhone tarriffs available:

Pay Monthly – iPhone 8GB, 16GB and 32GB models on multiple monthly plans, with the 16GB 3GS free on £45 plans and the 3G model free from £30 plans (both with a 24-month contract). A new high end “traveller” offer with inclusive roaming call and data allowance is available at £125 month.

Pay as You Go (PAYG) - Customers topping-up by £50 at purchase will be able to buy an iPhone 3G on Orange PAYG for £333. Any customer buying an iPhone on Orange PAYG will automatically get 250MB of data each month, plus unlimited use of the UK’s largest single public Wi-Fi network, BT Openzone, for 12 months.

Business Plans - Multiple 18 and 24 month plans at £30, £40 and £50 per month, as well as an unlimited Business Infinity tariff.
