Government’s Digital Britain report unveiled – More questions, no answers?

Manoj Solanki, Tuesday June 16, 2009 - 2:46 PM

After months of work, the final version of the Digital Report has been announced and outlines the potential future of broadband in the UK.

The report proposes how to prepare the UK’s broadband infrastructure for a digital future.  Among the proposals is a universal broadband commitment to offer a minimum of 2Mbps download speeds to all households in the UK.

However this has already been met with criticism, with many claiming it’s not enough.  Although 2Mbps broadband is a good starting point, when we look at consumption of media rich, HD quality content over the Internet in terms of entertainment, it will need to be faster.

Here’s some of what the Digital Britain report says:

  • Minimum of 2Mbps broadband for all of the UK
  • Maximise use of next generation broadband and mobile networks to improve infrastructure
  • Research, Education and Skills for those not online

Earlier in an article from the Prime Minister himself in the Times,  Gordon Brown talked about broadband being as vital as gas, electricity or water.

What do you think?

Is this all a waste of money or are you still waiting for broadband to come to your area?  Please give us your comments below.
