Ericsson launches mobile broadband module for netbooks

Telecoms company Ericsson has launched a mobile broadband module specifically designed to provide wireless 3G broadband to netbooks (mini laptops).

The Ericsson F3307 embedded mobile broadband module will enable laptop manufacturers to equip their latest netbooks with wireless Internet connectivity over a HSPA / 3G mobile network. It has already been pre-approved for use by mobile operators in over 75 countries.

Netbooks, which are more compact and portable than normal laptops, have become massively popular over the last year. Most mobile operators offer free netbook bundles with a mobile broadband package, with access through an external USB dongle.

However, Ericsson believes that over 300 million netbooks will be sold between 2009 and 2014 and expects most of these to have built-in mobile broadband capabilities.
