Virgin Media to make 200Mbps broadband a reality
Manoj Solanki, Thursday May 28, 2009 - 10:29 AMMotorola has announced that the cable operator has now deployed their CMTS solution to increase bandwidth available on its fibre-optic broadband network.
The solution is scalable, meaning Virgin Media will be able to build on the current 50Mbps speeds available using the newest cable broadband standard DOCSIS 3.0 to eventually provide download speeds up to 200Mbps. This will open up more opportunities for triple play services, including streaming HD video services.
Joe Cozzolino, senior vice president and general manager for Motorola Home & Networks Mobility EMEA & Asia Pacific said in a statement: “We are delighted to be selected by Virgin Media as it rolls out DOCSIS 3.0 based services, and we look forward to working closely as we head towards the reality of the 200Mb home.”
A CMTS solution such as the one provided by Motorola is commonly used to connect cable modems to a cable company’s fibre-optic network.
Virgin Media’s 50Mbps service is already available to large number of customers, and is due for completion this year.
