Friday Gossip: Google in talks to buy Twitter

Manoj Solanki, Friday April 3, 2009 - 8:33 AM

According to TechCrunch, the search engine giant and Twitter are in acquisition talks as well as the possibility of working on a real-time search engine.

The news comes from three sources close to the negotiations.  First it was thought these had reached the latter stages, but another source says acquisition talks are still in the early stages.  Twitter has already turned an offer from Facebook several months ago.

Twitter is a simplified social-messaging service where users interact by posting messages that are up to 140 characters in length.  It has grown beyond expectations, particularly over the last year.  Regular consumers, businesses as well as some celebrities are using Twitter.

In the UK, Stephen Fry has one of the most popular twitter accounts.  He has over 300,000 followers.  Other famous twitterers include Jonathan Ross, John Cleese and er, Britney Spears.  The latter is probably handled by her management company, however.

There has been much speculation and talk over whether Google would buy Twitter of late.  Twitter’s owners have already sold Blogger to them, so another round of negotiations was always on the cards.
