Vodafone and O2 to share mobile networks

Manoj Solanki, Thursday March 12, 2009 - 8:56 AM

Reports suggest that talks are already under way for the two mobile operators to pool their resources and provide better 3G mobile network coverage.

According to the Guardian, talks are already at an advanced stage.  Vodafone however does have an existing site sharing agreement with Orange, but this looks to be under threat.  The report says that Orange will be looking to hold talks with T-Mobile and 3, who have already announced a network sharing agreement.

A network sharing agreement should be good news for consumers, hopefully lowering prices and providing the best coverage for mobile broadband and other 3G services.

The move by O2 and Vodafone makes sense for O2, which has less 3G coverage than its competitors.  It was originally late in meeting the minimum coverage requirements last year according to the conditions of its 3G license but caught up eventually.

Like the 3 and T-Mobile agreement, O2 and Vodafone’s agreement will reduce costs for the company and also allow a reduction of 51,000 base stations around the country.

No official comment on any agreement has been made but an announcement is due in the coming weeks according to reports.
