Some online speed tests still misleading consumers

Manoj Solanki, Wednesday March 11, 2009 - 11:50 AM

Virgin Media has been evaluating several web-based speed tests which show that consumers are still being misled.

The cable operator said that inaccurate results and reports based on unsubstantiated data misled consumers.

This isn’t the first time it has evaluated speed testers.  The first time round the results were worse as it found most websites were not accurately measuring higher speed connections.  This time round the results did show an improvement, but Virgin Media says many are still “unable to provide accurate results for speeds of 10Mb, and are a long way from being able to check faster speeds of 20Mb and 50Mb”.

Since the first evaluation, speedtest.net and thinkbroadband were the only two reliable websites to accurately measure speeds of 10Mb, 20Mb and 50Mb.  Two more, ispreview.com and Broadband Expert have now been added to that list.

Jon James, Director of Broadband at Virgin Media thinks that more clarity is need on speed test results.  In a statement he commented, “Consumers rely on these sites for clear advice and honest results. The fact that many of them cannot accurately measure speeds of 20Mb, and some cannot even accurately measure speeds of 10Mb, demonstrates there is a clear need for more transparency.”
