Sky continues broadband subscriber growth

Manoj Solanki, Thursday January 29, 2009 - 11:52 AM

Sky posted a strong set of results for the half year to 2008, with broadband, TV and telephony products all doing well.

Sky broadband, which launched in 2006, now has 1.95 million subscribers.  The last quarter saw 163,000 net broadband additions.  Although only 13 percent of customers take a broadband bundle including TV and telephony, the company said it wil link the telephony and broadband products more closely to increase the number of customers taking a bundle.

Sky+ and Sky+HD products continue to perform well, with over 50 percent of customers now taking one of these products.

In the current difficult economic climate, Sky also said it plans to create around 1,000 jobs to support its growth plans for 2009.

Interestingly, Sky’s results may have been helped by current difficult economic climate.  People are spending less money and not going out as much, meaning they are spending more time at home.  So they’re probably watching more TV, or going online, probably with Sky broadband.
