Millions turn to web to watch Obama inauguration

Manoj Solanki, Thursday January 22, 2009 - 11:29 AM

Yesterday, a record number of users turned to their PCs to watch Barack Obama inauguration.

The Internet played its part as users logged on to major websites to watch a live video stream of the historic event. CNN.com reported 21.3 million connected video streams, which smashed its previous record of 5.3 million on Election Day.

Closer to home, the BBC’s online video feed eventually buckled under the weight of heavy traffic and was down for 30 minutes just after President Obama finished his speech.

Broadband ISP Plusnet reported a fourfold increase in traffic as many Britons watched the event on their work PCs.

Users were also heavily active on sites such as Facebook and Twitter. CNN.com partnered with Facebook to provide status updates on event. A spokesman for Facebook reported 600,000 comments during the inauguration.
