Broadband makes up 93.2 percent of all Internet connections

Figures released from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) show continuing decline of dial-up as broadband takes over.

Dial-up connections saw a decrease of 20.1 percent from March to June 2008.  This also lead to a slight decline in the number of overall Internet connections in the UK, which was down from 119.6 million in March 2008 to 119.3 million in June 2008. 

Broadband speeds

The number of users on higher speed connections, meaning packages from providers that offer higher headline speeds, also saw a rise.  There was a drop off of the number of users on sub 2Mbps packages, to 43.1 percent in June 2008, whilst the percentage on 2 to 8Mbps packages was up to 52.1 percent in the same month. 

The end speeds experienced by users is not indicated in the survey, however a recent report from Ofcom shows that this is also on the up. 

The ONS figures are based on data collected from most ISPs in the UK.  Not all ISPs in the UK respond to the survey.  However, the figures still reveal that broadband has almost taken over, as broadband packages are widely available and at cheap price.
