BT to invest £1.5 billion in Super-Fast broadband
Manoj Solanki, Tuesday July 15, 2008 - 11:51 AMBT has today announced plans to roll out a fibred-based broadband network that can offer speeds from 40Mbps to 100Mbps.
The £1.5 billion programme will involve deploying Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) or Fibre To The Cabinet (FTTC). The type of deployment will depend on the interest shown by government and local authorities says BT.
The fibre-based network would serve up to 10 million homes by 2012 and the telecoms operator aims to serve both cities and rural communities in its deployment, again depending on regional authorities.
Where fibre is not to used, customers will have access to BT’s 21CN ADSL2+ based broadband network, which offers headline speeds of 24Mbps. According to its recent tests, the majority of ADSL2+ customers can get speeds of around 10Mbps or more.
In related news, wholesale ISP Entanet has lanched one of the first 24Mbps services based on BT’s 21CN network. This should become available through one of its resellers soon. The service is currently only available at a limited number of exchanges, mostly around the West Midlands, where the first trials took place.
BT has hinted that it would expand the fibre deployment beyond its current plans “if there is sufficient demand and it can make an adequate return on its investment.”
