Vodafone choose BT to manage growing demand for Mobile Broadband

Manoj Solanki, Friday April 11, 2008 - 12:01 PM

The two companies have announced a 5 year agreement that will see BT manage the demand from Vodafone’s bandwidth-intensive mobile applications.

Vodafone will use BT’s 21st Century Network (21CN) Ethernet Service, which will manage traffic and bandwidth from Vodafone’s UK base stations to BT’s core national network.  The new service will manage the increased demand for moble applications, including downloading and streaming of video and music through a mixture of scalability and flexibility.

The idea being that Vodafone will not need to pay for a huge upfront investment to cope with predicted bandwidth usage, but rather pay more of this when traffic and revenue actually increases, avoiding initial capital investment and carrying less risk.

Jeni Mundy, Chief Technology Officer of Vodafone UK said in a statment: “By working with BT Wholesale, we are able to realise immediate cost efficiencies and focus on our customers while BT provides a managed service for our growing access and backhaul needs.”

Since late 2007 there has been a surge in demand for Mobile Broadband on phones and on laptops/PCs via so-called USB Modem Sticks or Dongles.
