Virgin Media to combat illegal downloaders

Manoj Solanki, Wednesday April 2, 2008 - 11:54 AM

Virgin Media is to trial a scheme aimed at tracking and punishing users who are downloading music illegally.

In a joint venture with the BPI (British Phonographic Industry), a “three strikes” policy will be applied to customers who are found to download music illegally. User would first receive two warnings, and after a third offence, could lead to termination of the broadband service.

The pilot of the new scheme is due to go live within the next few months. The BPI and Virgin Media will trace offending users to their names and addresses to apply the three strikes policy.

ISPs in the UK, along with several other nations have been under pressure from Goverment and the owners of copyright material to take action against illegal file downloaders. It is estimated that around 6 million people in the UK are currently downloading material illegally using file-sharing applications.

  1. Incredible how Hollywood starts to run out of money, and the RIAA puts pressure on ISPs to start to crunch down on (lets face it )a few individuals for this! Yet at the same time other major ISPs are offering free music ! Virgin is on of the worst sppeds anyway!
