Virgin Media announces broadband speed upgrades from 4Mb to 10Mb

The cable company has announced details of free upgrades for 4Mb customers and released further details of a new 50Mb service.

Customers on Virgin Media’s ‘L’ (middle) tier broadband service will benefit from a free speed upgrade from 4Mb to 10Mb.  Virgin Media says the upgrades are due to start from late February and will be completed by late summer.  New customers could get up to 10Mbps broadband for £11.50 a month at current prices (when taken with a phoneline), which is good value in the current market.

Although certain customers have reported speed issues, sometimes due to traffic shaping (reducing certain users’ maximum download speeds to improve overall network performance), on the whole there are less factors that would affect the speeds compared to ADSL through a BT phone line. 

Virgin Media’s top tier package, ‘XL’ currently offers up to 20Mb, but this is also due to be upgraded to 50Mb by the end of 2008, following successful trials in Ashford, Folkestone and Dover.
