Sky broadband signs up over 1 million customers
Manoj Solanki, Monday October 29, 2007 - 10:35 AMPay TV operator BSkyB’s broadband customer base reaches 1 million in just over a year.
It said that around 30% of Sky Broadband customers were new to Sky whilst 70% took a paid-for option. In the year to 30 June 2007, it added 716,000 customers. It also quoted figures from competitors for the same period, including Carphone Warehouse and BT Broadband, who added 701,000 and 691,000 respectively.
In the last 3 months to June 2007 the company netted 259,000 customers, over 100,000 more than its nearest rival BT, who added 146,000.
Chief executive of BSkyB, James Murdoch said, “Our aim is to meet the hunger for better quality, better service and better value, so to be the choice of one million customers after just 14 months is a real achievement.”
In related news, Virgin Media has told the Daily Telegraph that BSkyB’s proposals to resolve issues over its 17.9 percent holding in ITV did not go far enough. BSkyB offered to cede voting rights for a portion of its holding to satisfy a probe by the Competition Commission. Virgin Media believes it should apply to BSkyB’s entire holding.
