3 partners with Skype to launch 3G Internet phone
Manoj Solanki, Monday October 29, 2007 - 2:08 PMMobile operator 3 and Internet calls provider Skype have announced the launch of the 3 Skypephone.
The Skypephone comes with the Skype software built-in and allows users to make cheap or free calls over the Internet (known as VoIP, or Voice over-IP). The phone offers free mobiles calls and instant messages to any other Skype user. Existing Skype users are able to log into straight their account. New users can create an account from the phone itself.
Mobile operator 3 says that 246 million globally registered Skype users can be reached for free using the Skypephone. The phone itself was developed in partnership with Qualcomm, and integrates the Skype software with address book and messaging features on the phone.
The free calls apply to existing 3 users who are on a contract, or top up their PAYG (pay as you go) credit monthly. The phone costs £49.99 on the PAYG tariff or free on a 3 mobile contract. It will be available from 2 November 2007.
Kevin Russell, Chief Executive Officer of 3 UK, said, “To enable Skype to go mobile in this way brings free internet calls together with an affordable 3G handset. Mobile has the potential to massively increase access to internet calling.”
