Tiscali customer emails going astray
Manoj Solanki, Thursday May 31, 2007 - 1:22 PMThousands of emails sent by customers have not been reaching their destination for the past week, Tiscali have admitted.
Since May 24, emails sent by Tiscali customers from a “tiscali.co.uk” address have not reached their destination, but users are unaware that they haven’t, as no warning or error messages are sent back to the original sender. All 1.8 million Tiscali broadband customers may have been affected by the issues.
Tiscali finally took note of the problems by putting a notice on the Tiscali service status website on May 29. It attributed the problems to Spammers. That is, users who send out large amounts of unsolicited emails using Tiscali’s email services.
This has in turn led to other ISPs putting any emails from Tiscali on a spam blacklist.
According to the Tiscali website:
“We are currently experiencing issues with outbound emails on our mail servers. This is not affecting all delivery addresses, some mail will continue to be delivered as normal, but some mail is being blocked by the receiving email servers.
Spam is a major issue for all ISPs and periodically all ISPs will be targeted by spammers. We unfortunately have currently fallen foul to such an attack and have been targeted by spammers using our service to send out spam, this in turn has meant other ISPs have taken measures to block mail being sent by Tiscali.”
Tiscali customers are advised to check the status page regularly for updates. In the meanwhile, Tiscali have advised customers to use free email services such as Hotmail for sending emails.
