281 million global broadband subscribers

Manoj Solanki, Wednesday March 28, 2007 - 12:34 PM

The latest figures from Point Topic show a 31% growth in broadband subscriptions over the year end 2006.

The US remains the largest broadband market, with over 57 million subscribers.

Of note is that China is continuing to close the gap in second place.  In December 2005 Point Topic thought that China would surpass the U.S. in 2006 for new broadband access lines with the level of growth seen at that time.  Many other analysts also believe that China will become the biggest broadband market in the world by 2007.

However other countries that are not in the top 10 are growing at a faster rate.  The Middle East and Africa is currently the fastest growing region.

In terms of access, Point Topic says that DSL is still the most popular method of getting broadband, accounting for a 65.7% market share.  However, DSL accounts for a hefty 87% of all broadband subscribers in the Middle East and Africa.

In the EU, DSL accounts for 82% of broadband connections and added a total of 17.5 million DSL subscribers for the year 2006.

Apart from DSL, the next most popular form of broadband access is FTTx, which includes Fibre To The Home and other close location technologies.  Less than one percent of broadband is delivered using satellite.
