BT reaches 1 million VoIP customers milestone

Manoj Solanki, Wednesday January 10, 2007 - 12:25 PM

BT has announced that it now has over one million VoIP (Voice Over IP) customers.

The customers make use of their broadband connection to make phonecalls over the Internet using BT Broadband Talk and BT Softphone. They account for over a third of overall BT broadband usage. The services allow customers to make calls using their PC, a videophone or normal phone with various monthly calling plans offering cheaper calls.

The telecoms operator also beat its original forecast, reaching one million customers over six months earlier than predicted.

The news follows a recent announcement where BT reached a milestone of ten million overall broadband customers using its wholesale and retail operations.

Gavin Patterson, managing director of consumer at BT Retail said in a statement: “We now have more than a million customer accounts for our VoIP services – and to achieve this in six months is nothing short of spectacular. UK consumers are clearly happy to embrace internet telephony when it is straightforward to use and offers great value, and through BT Total Broadband our customers are getting all the benefits that broadband has to offer.”
