BT to break ten million broadband connections barrier
Manoj Solanki, Tuesday January 2, 2007 - 2:07 PMBT is set to to smash through the ten million broadband barrier of overall connections through BT’s network.
BT’s broadband connections are supplied through BT´s Wholesale and Openreach divisions. BT Wholesale supplies broadband to over 8.7 million customers, including BT’s own retail division, and BT Openreach supplies over 1.3 million connections to customers via the LLU (Local Loop Unbundling) network. In 2002, BT projected around five million broadband connections by the end of 2006.
Broadband over BT’s network is also said to be outpacing cable broadband. Only about 11 per cent of all new broadband connections were through cable for the quarter ending September 2006, with 89 percent going through BT’s broadband network.
Although BT Retail’s share of the broadband market is only at around 24 percent, due to the intense competition in the broadband market, BT still profits through each broadband connection as the carrier network.
Ben Verwaayen, Chief Executive of BT Group, said in a statement: “2007 is beginning with broadband firmly established at the heart of the UK economy, helping businesses to compete and enriching people’s lives. The UK now has over 200 service providers making it the most competitive broadband market in the world. That means fantastic choice and value for consumers, and a constant stream of new and innovative applications.”
