BT launches next-gen TV service

Manoj Solanki, Monday December 4, 2006 - 12:27 PM

BT has officially launched its widely anticipated next generation television service, BT Vision.

The service will offer an extensive library of on-demand content through their broadband connection and over 40 Freeview channels through their aerial.  The service does not require a subscription or minimum monthly payment.  Subscribers simply pay for the content they want to see.  This will include pay per view movies with prices set to be lower than the equivalent on Sky or Cable.

Customer will need a new set-top box, called the V-box, which will cost around £199.  This offers up to 80 hours of personal video recording, pause and reply of live TV.  The box is also HD ready.  Customers (new or existing) who take out a new BT Total Broadband contract can get the box for free.

From 2007, BT Vision will be further enhanced to deliver more special interest programming and new interactive services, including a video telephony service that will allow customers to talk face to face whilst watching TV.  To cater for the popularity of social networking, there will also be a service to allow users to share videos, photos and music.  Summer 2007 is the launch of its new sports service, with live football games, including “near live” on-demand FA Premiership games.

Ian Livingston, BT Retail chief executive said: “BT Vision is all about giving control to the viewer – control over what they watch, when they watch it and how they pay for it. We believe that broadband can transform television and take it into a new era. BT Vision is ideal for people who want more choice than Freeview delivers but who want that extra choice without being tied to a pricey, long-term subscription.”
