Vodafone to offer unlimited broadband and phone package

Mobile phone operator Vodafone today announced details of a new broadband and telephone package, to be launched to Vodafone consumer contract customers on 8 January 2007.

The Vodafone at Home service includes up to 8Mbps unlimited broadband (with fair usage policy), line rental, inclusive landline calls plus 25% off calls to mobiles.  The service will compete with the likes of Carphone Warehouse, Pipex and Sky.  Vodafone consumer contract customers will need to keep their mobile contract to qualify for the £25 per month service. 

Vodafone At Home is based on an 18-month contract, independent of any mobile contract (although a mobile contract is still required).  The service will cost £35 per month for those that decide to cancel their Vodafone mobile contract or those who are not Vodafone contract customers. 

Customers can also buy a half-price Vodafone Mobile Connect USB Modem, enabling them to use Vodafone’s 3G broadband network from their laptop for a monthly fee of £29.

Other highlights of the offer include:

• Free connection from January 2007
• Free Norton Internet Security 2006 software for six months
• Free guaranteed Netgear Ethernet modem
• 10 email addresses

As the service will use BT wholesale to provide the broadband connection, it is available to 97% of UK households.  Their competitors for the most part are utilising the LLU (Local Loop Unbundling) process of installing their own equipment in telephone exchanges in order to provide the broadband service. As coverage is limited to those exchanges that have been unbundled by a provider, Vodafone may at least be able to offer the service to a larger customer base at the moment.  However, LLU providers such as Carphone Warehouse are offering similar deals at lower prices so it remains to be seen whether the offer will be competitive enough.
