Voice and Broadband … the way to go?

Manoj Solanki, Friday June 2, 2006 - 11:46 PM

The market has really opened up since Talk Talk announced a combined voice and broadband package for just £20.99 a month. Plusnet and Biscit are among the ISPs to hit back with similar packages.

These new combined broadband and phone offers are great value for money. Most consumers currently pay a minimum of £10 a month in phone line rental, excluding call costs. Broadband packages can range from £10 a month to £40 plus.

On closer inspection of these new offers, Biscit offer a similar deal to Talk Talk at £19.99 a month but this price goes up slightly after the first six months. Talk Talk along with Biscit both require signing up for an 18 month contract. Plusnet only have a one month contract at a similar price, but have an interesting download limit of 50MB after which you will pay 0.224p per MB. *

Although Biscit and Plusnet both offer a certain amount of free phone calls, they’re not unlimited like Talk Talk’s offer. Talk Talk also guarantee that your bills will be cheaper than BT.

At this point in time, Talk Talk’s deal seems to offer the best value for most consumers.

Figuring out your requirements

If you’re in the market for Broadband, taking a few points into account can help save you money on broadband and voice calls.

  • Consider how you use or will use the Internet. If it’s for simple browsing and checking email, then it won’t matter if there is a download limit or is not the fastest speed. In all honesty, 20Mbps broadband isn’t necessary to check email and browse the occasional website! Even up to 2Mbps is plenty for this type of usage. If it’s for online gaming, downloading of songs and video or peer to peer, then a speed of 8 Mbps upwards is ideal.
  • Consider your phone usage. Look at your latest bills and see what type of calls you make. Are they local, national, mobile, international? Compare these against any voice and Broadband offers to see if you benefit
  • Many other telecoms services offer cheaper calls as an alternative. For example, check the following providers:
