Broadband fever continues apace

Manoj Solanki, Monday April 2, 2007 - 12:21 PM

According to an Ofcom report out today, over half of UK adults have broadband at home, up from 39% a year ago.

The report shows that more than 13 million UK homes and SMEs are connected to broadband.  Back in 2001 a mere 330,000 consumers had broadband.

Broadband prices are also continuing to fall.  This is due in no small part to the introduction of the bundle, where providers often bolt-on broadband for free or a lower price if the customer buys another product.  In fact, Ofcom believes that bundling has become an important factor for consumers, with the benefit of getting cheaper broadband and also having a single bill.

The average connection speed is thought to be at 3.8 Mbit/s, however almost half of all residential users are unaware of their headline connection speed.

The number of LLU connections also continues to grow, and now accounts for 10% of all broadband connections.  Broadband providers such as Carphone Warehouse (inc. AOL) and Sky are helping to fuel the growth.
