DSL not always suitable for voice calls, says network monitoring service
Manoj Solanki, Thursday April 23, 2009 - 10:42 AMAccording to NetEvidence, a Network Services company, DSL technology is not always suitable for voice traffic.
Many businesses use DSL connections for voice traffic, meaning they make phone calls over their Internet connection. This is often a very cost-effective measure for a range of businesses.
NetEvidence’s monitoring service, called “Highlight”, monitors over 6,000 DSL connections for its customers. The company has just announced it is to partner with Voiceflex, a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) provider that also has one of the largest SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) networks in the UK.
SIP is a protocol standard widely used in the process of sending voice, as well as other types of multimedia data over the Internet.
The Highlight service will provide Voiceflex customers transparent information about performance and any faults. For example, poor performing lines, overloaded or faulty lines are reported with full supporting information.
“The transparency offered by Highlight means we can be confident that we are delivering the best possible call quality over the internet,” said Richard Garner, Sales Director of Data and IP Services for Voiceflex.
“Highlight’s reports will also be available across all our ISP and WAN services ensuring upgrades and quality of service can be anticipated and justified within an organisation.”
Richard Thomas, Managing Director of NetEvidence warned that DSL technology is not always suitable for voice traffic, and requires monitoring to minimise risks such as poor performance or even loss of service. “Companies that opt to use SIP over un-monitored DSL lines risk destabilising their vital fixed phone communications,” says Thomas.
“Voiceflex appears to be unique in the market in its desire to offer full transparency to its customers,” added Thomas.
