BT reaches 1.5 million LLU connections

BT Openreach have announced that 1.5 million lines will have been unbundled this week.
BT’s LLU network is utilised by operators who install their own equipment in exchanges and are able to offer lower prices for broadband.  Now that the key milestone of 1.5 million LLU connections is in sight, BT’s Wholesale division will be able to lower its prices to provide a cost effective alternative for providers reselling BT Wholesale.

A few months back, BT had announced that it will lower prices in May 2007 for BT Wholesale when the key LLU target is reached, however the price changes also involved a new broadband termination fee, which bring down overall cost benefits. 

It is unknown yet whether BT will alter wholesale prices any sooner than it originally said.  We’ll be investigating this further in the following months and will report back on any price cuts planned.

Steve Robertson, chief executive of Openreach, said on the announcement:

“I’m delighted to announce that the LLU market in the UK has officially taken off.  It is a tribute to a great deal of hard work and investment, by the whole Openreach team and by our LLU customers, that we have achieved this number.  And we’re going to spend around £1bn this year on improving the access network still further.”
