Ofcom conducts broadband speed tests
Manoj Solanki, Friday January 9, 2009 - 9:08 AMOfcom has released the results of research into broadband speeds in the UK.
Ofcom says it has conducted the “most sophisticated and thorough study ever conducted into UK broadband speeds”. The 7,000 tests were conducted in 1,500 homes over a 30 day period.
So to the results. UK consumers receive an average of 3.6Mbps (Megabits per second). Ofcom reckons this is enough for audio and standard definition TV.
It also found that subscribers in urban areas tended to receive faster speeds than rural areas. This is most likely due to many rural homes being further away from their local phone exchange, which is a factor in actual broadband speeds received.
Consumers who are on “up to” 8Mbps packages averaged 3.6Mbps, but one in five received an average of 2Mbps.
Overall, 83 percent of consumers are happy with their broadband service, but a quarter claim the speed they receive are not what they expected. A hefty 93 percent were happy with the web browsing experience, but this dropped down to 60 percent for those who watch or download feature films (legally of course!).
While 93% of users claim to be satisfied with their web browsing experience when using their broadband connection, satisfaction is significantly lower for all other types of internet use; ranging from 77% of those who listen to or download audio, to 60% of those who watch or download full feature films.
