BT announces 40Mb broadband trial

Manoj Solanki, Tuesday October 14, 2008 - 1:47 PM

BT’s Openreach division has announced two sites to be used for pilots for fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) network access.

The two sites are Muswell Hill, London and Whitchurch, South Glamorgan.  It will involve up to 15,000 customer premises per site, and they will receive headline broadband speeds of 40Mbps.

David Campbell, Openreach director said: “These two sites were chosen from a shortlist and we expect to announce detailed plans for the initial market deployment of the Openreach product in early 2010, again following consultation with all interested parties.”

FTTC refers to the use of optical-fibre which will replace the standard copper based local loop from the local BT exchange up to a street cabinet.  This will allow for faster broadband speeds, which are degraded with current BT lines from the exchange that are made from copper.
