More than 5 million LLU lines in UK says Ofcom
Manoj Solanki, Friday October 3, 2008 - 1:26 PMOfcom has today reported that there are now more than 5 million LLU lines in the UK, compared to just 123,000 three years ago.
LLU is the process where providers install their own equipment in BT exchanges, allowing them to control the phoneline from the BT exchange to the user’s premises. This allows the provider to offer its own phoneline or broadband service at a cheaper price to the consumer.
LLU providers that offer broadband or phonelines in this way include Carphone Warehouse, Sky and O2. Carphone Warehouse were one of the earlier adopters of LLU, where they first launched a “FREE” Broadband and phoneline package for £20 per month.
Ofcom states that LLU has enabled greater competition in the market, meaning more choice and lower prices for consumers.
