BT aims to impress with Broadband plus smartphone
Manoj Solanki, Friday May 9, 2008 - 8:30 AMBT has announced the launch of “BT Total Broadband Anywhere”, a package that includes home broadband and a free smartphone providing Internet access out of the home.
Now you can take your broadband anywhere. At least according to BT, as they announced the new “BT Total Broadband Anywhere” product. The new package offers the usual stuff that you get with any Total Broadband product, plus a smartphone that provides Internet access through Wi-Fi hotspots and through its BT Mobile network, which is provided by Vodafone.
The smartphone is made by Taiwan-based mobile manufacturer HTC. There are two smartphones to choose from on sign-up and both are Wi-Fi and GPRS ready. They can provide unlimited Wi-Fi access at over 82,000 BT FON Hotspots, and 2,500 BT Openzone Wi-Fi hotspots.
Internet connectivity when out of the range of any hotspots is provided through the mobile network using GPRS, with a 10MB usage allowance, so it’s really only for checking email and occasional browsing. There is a hefty 1.50 per MB charge when the allowance is reached.
The new package also looks like an attempt to compete with the likes of 3 and Vodafone, who have launched Mobile Broadband packages with low line rental costs and the convenience of broadband-like speeds on the move. BT’s Broadband Anywhere however can’t compete on the same level, unless you’re in a hotspot area.
The smartphone also provides Internet access around the home by connecting to the BT Home Hub router. The smartphone is like having another mobile and provides 50 minutes of talk and text. Upgrades are also available for more talk and text bundles.
BT Total Broadband Anywhere starts from £23.99 per month for the first three months and £29.99 thereafter.
“Communications services are converging, and it is clear that customers want consistent access to the things that matter not only at home, but in the palm of their hands wherever they are,” said John Petter, managing director, Consumer at BT.
“When shopping, waiting for a train or having a coffee, Broadband Anywhere enables you to read e-mails, check the football score or compare prices.”
