Virgin Media cable broadband users suffer outage
Manoj Solanki, Tuesday December 18, 2007 - 1:10 PMThe Virgin Media (cable) broadband network suffered from a major outage last night in several regions. The outage on the cable broadband network, was due to a malfunction in one of its automated maintenance procedures on its network.
This caused many set-top boxes and modems to lose their assigned IP address – their unique identification on the network. This in turn meant the network attempted to re-assign all the IP addresses at once, which placed a strain on the network and lead to the outage.
The problem also affected Virgin Media’s on-demand and interactive services.
According to Virgin Media, the problems were rectified by the morning. However some users still reported connection issues. The company said some have been able to get online quickly, whilst others are taking longer. Virgin Media are also advising customers to re-start their modems or set-top boxes.
