Global mobile broadband usage increasing rapidly
Manoj Solanki, Thursday October 4, 2007 - 12:04 PMThe number of mobile users across the globe with access to broadband services is increasing rapidly, according to a new report.
The findings come from the GSM Association (GSMA), a global trade body that represents over 700 GSM mobile phone operators.
Mobile operators across the globe are upgrading their 3G networks to use HSPA technology and adding newer, compatible handsets. This in turn has lead to a rapid increase in the number of mobile broadband users.
HSPA technology, or High Speed Packet Access, is an upgraded 3G network that allows for faster data transfer rates. HSDPA (High Speed Download Packet Access) networks for example, are able to support download speeds from 1.8Mb/s to 3.6Mb/s, and an uplink speed of 384kb/s.
Uptake of HSPA devices has surged in Asia, Europe, North America and Australia. HSPA devices are widely being used for general broadband connectivity to PCs and laptops, as well as mobile phones. In some cases, users may see it as a viable alternative (or addition) to a domestic, fixed-line broadband service.
There are over 120 different HSPA handsets available worldwide, with the figure set to increase in the run up to Christmas.
In the UK, 3’s recent launch of a 3.5G USB modem and its £10 per month mobile broadband services confirms the popularity of mobile broadband. Its first allocation of USB modems sold out within three weeks of the product going on sale on 4 September.
Rob Conway, Chief Executive Officer of the GSMA commented, “Uptake of mobile broadband services is surging in many countries as consumers and business users see the benefit of having a high-speed connection available to them at all times. We are witnessing the creation of a virtuous circle in which mobile broadband will achieve further economies of scale, driving down the cost of HSPA equipment and enabling more and more people to enjoy easy access to mobile multimedia services.”
