BT Total Broadband passes four million mark
Manoj Solanki, Monday September 3, 2007 - 5:28 AMThe UK’s most popular broadband provider now has over four million customers.
The broadband boom in recent years has been due to the high availability of ADSL broadband to 99.8 percent of the UK’s homes through the incumbent’s traditional copper based network. As a result, the UK has one of the world’s most competitive broadband markets.
BT is so far enjoying a successful year, having added a million customers in the last ten months alone. They have also regularly figured at the top of Epitiro’s broadband performance surveys.
The UK is overtaking most of its key G8 competitors in terms of broadband penetration, with only Canada ahead. The UK has more than 15 million broadband connections, with 11.5m of those running over the BT network and remaining via the UK’s cable network.
The incumbent is currently busy rolling out its 21CN (21st Century Network) service to the UK that will offer broadband speeds of up to 24Mbps as well as enhanced communications services. All designed to use the Internet’s communication protocol (called IP) for voice and data transfer.
BT Retail chief executive Ian Livingston said: “Four million customers is a great achievement in such a short time. Broadband has proved to be one of the most popular new services ever seen. It is already delivering next generation television, inclusive free phone calls in High Definition sound and great value mobile calls.
“Broadband can provide so many more services than just internet surfing and it has become central to many people’s lives and businesses. Customers want to take advantage of the potential of broadband and need a high quality, reliable service – that’s why BT is the UK’s most popular broadband service.”
