Orange agrees deal with BT to provide broadband

Manoj Solanki, Friday April 16, 2010 - 3:20 PM

According to reports, Orange has struck a deal with BT for them to provide fixed-line broadband services to Orange customers.

The move means Orange will hand over control of it’s LLU-based broadband network to BT, which is currently available to around 65% of the UK.  Orange will be using BT’s broadband network and will significantly increase their broadband coverage.

An Orange spokesperson told SeekBroadband.com that they have entered into a closer partnership with BT Wholesale to allow them to build bespoke and dedicated network management systems for their fixed line service.

“We believe that by doing so, we will not only be able to maintain and improve our network performance, but we will be well placed to take advantage of future technology developments as required. It will also allow us to concentrate on enhancing the experience we offer our customers and to enrich our already great value propositions – making them even better for UK customers,” the spokesperson continued.

Bruno Duarte, Orange’s vice-president of strategy, told The Times of Orange’s poor performance in the broadband sector, which he says is down to an ageing infrastructure and would require a big investment to bring up to date.  Orange’s customer base is declining and stands at less than One Million now.

Away from their fixed-line broadband service, things are looking brighter (no pun intended) for Orange.  It recently received E.U. approval for a merger with T-Mobile. It’s mobile broadband service has been doing well, with it now offering the best 3G coverage at the moment, and has been coming out on top in Yougov’s latest dongle tracker surveys.
