HSPA mobile broadband connections reach 200 million, global investment set to rise

The GSMA, an organisation representing the interests of mobile operators around the world, said that they will invest up to $72 Billion in mobile broadband technologies such as HSPA and HSPA+. HSPA technology is widely in use all over the world for mobile broadband including the UK. The investment is driven by the fact that there are now 200 million HSPA connections over the world.
Asia Pacific is to invest the most at $34 billion with North America to spend $19 billion. Operators in North America however are to spend 80%of investment in mobile broadband compared most around the world who will spend around half of its investment on mobile broadband. Europe is to invest $14 billion and is due to experience the biggest growth in mobile broadband connections with 120 million users. Asia Pacific and North America behind them with 116 million and 58 million respectively.
Australia sets the example for mobile broadband, with Telstra/CSL’s HSPA+ network boasting the world’s largest 3G network and covering more than 99% of the population. That’s not all. For the past year it’s been offering peak download speeds of 21Mbps. It is currrently testing new dual carrier-based HSPA technology that can offer download speeds of up to 42Mbps.
More than half of HSPA networks currently offer download speeds of up to 3.6Mbps with small number of these having live HSPA+ networks that can offers up to 21Mbps. In the UK, most operators including Vodafone, 3 and T-Mobile headline download speeds of up to 7.2Mbps.
