BT announces six extra communities to receive super-fast broadband
Manoj Solanki, Monday January 3, 2011 - 3:24 PMBT has announced six communities to receive super-fast fibre broadband in their local exchange following the ‘Race to Infinity’ competition that allowed locals to vote for their exchange to be upgraded.
Last year BT set up the ‘Race to Infinity’ competition to find five extra communities to receive super-fast broadband in addition to exchanges that are already due to be upgraded. It was also to ensure that it invested in areas where it appeared to be commercially viable and the interest was high.
Due to very high levels of votes from six communities, BT made them all winners of the competition, rather than choosing five as initially planned.
The winners are:
- Baschurch, Shropshire
- Blewbury, Oxfordshire
- Caxton, Cambridgeshire
- Innerleithen, Scottish Borders
- Madingley, Cambridgeshire
- Whitchurch, Hampshire
Communities were able to vote by visiting a special website set up by BT. Now that winners have been chosen, BT’s Openreach division, which also handles all ADSL broadband provision to customers, will assess the areas and plan deployment. The winning exchanges will be enabled by early 2012.
BT also stated the communities that just missed out; Marton in Warwickshire, Capel in Surrey, Burley in Wharfedale in Bradford and Lindfield in West Sussex. BT says it will engage with any community that didn’t win the competition for possible future super-fast broadband deployment where at least 75 per cent of homes and businesses voted for their exchange.
BT’s nationwide fibre broadband rollout is due to reach two thirds of the UK by 2015 and will provide up to 40Mbps download speeds and 10Mbps upload speeds.
